Award-winning vocalist Celia Berk makes her Jazz at Kitano debut on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 with two sets at 8pm and 10pm. “Comes Love” is her new collaboration with pianist Sean Gough, which they debuted earlier this year in venues including Birdland Theater and the National Arts Club. Meeting at an intersection between jazz and cabaret, they have created a program of songs about the highs and lows and in-betweens of love, including the kinds of hidden gems by great songwriters such as Irving Berlin, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Billy Strayhorn which have become Celia’s trademark.Celia and Sean said, “This is a different type of collaboration for both of us, offering new musical challenges. Sean approaches popular songs mainly as an improviser, Celia through the lens of storytelling. Over time, the lyrics of the songs we chose began to guide both of us to unexpected musical places. We hope the audience will enjoy the discoveries we have made as much as we have.”Sean Gough is best known for his longtime collaboration with veteran bass player Gene Perla, with whom he has appeared across the United States and in Europe, including at Smalls and Zinc Bar. Since a young age, Sean has accompanied his grandfather, Metropolitan Opera tenor Ronald Naldi, in recitals. Celia and Sean will be joined by bassist Steve Doyle (Christine Ebersole, Chris Potter, Kurt Rosenwinkel) at this show.

A relatively new addition to the New York scene, Celia has released two acclaimed albums since 2015. You Can’t Rush Spring, Celia’s solo debut, earned a 2015 Bistro Award: Vocalist, 2015 MAC Award: New York Debut – Female, 2015 BroadwayWorld Award for Best New York Cabaret Debut, and The 2015 Margaret Whiting Award. Celia’s second album, Manhattan Serenade, received the 2017 LaMott Friedman Award. Rex Reed called her “one of the best singers I’ve heard in a long time,” and Stephen Holden said, “Ms. Berk made you feel about New York the same way a Cole Porter song makes you feel about Paris.” She has made memorable appearances at Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and The Town Hall, and she is excited to make her Jazz at Kitano debut. Those Girls like to sing harmony and there’s lots of it in this evening of music & humor! With songs from a wide mix of artists, eras and styles, Eve Eaton, Rachel Hanser, Karen Mack, and Wendy Russell are four singers who put their own twist on arranging things. A popular favorite with critics and audiences alike, this NYC based vocal group was chosen Best Vocal Group for both 2017 & 2018 by the Manhattan Assoc. of Clubs & Cabarets (MAC), and this May they made their Carnegie Hall debut.

Three of them like cats, one plays the recorder, all are fond of cookies, and one of them can recite almost all the lyrics to “Stairway to Heaven” backward. In heels. With fresh takes on everything from the Beatles to U2 to country classics & swing, a good time is a four-gone conclusion!   ThoseGirlsSing.com

We are improvising on songs that we grew up with.  Songs we love and that had strong impressions on us as kids.  We play Great American Songbook classics and standard pop repertoire all the time – in other places.  Somewhere between Jam-Band and Jeff Beck or John McLaughlin, Harkness picks up an electric guitar, kicks on some fun pedals, and fronts a very strong and colorful rhythm section.  With new arrangements at every show, you’ll hear songs by: The Beatles * Mr. Mister * The Cars * The Carpenters * Supertramp *  Gary Wright * 10cc * Grateful Dead * Jackson 5 * Joe Jackson * Willy Wonka * The Eagles * The Doors * Little River Band * Thomas Dolby * Level 42 * The * Zombies * Foreigner * The Who, and many more…

A short walk from Grove Street PATH Station, this new venue is top shelf –  where musicians pop in on the way home from their gigs to see their friends.  The acoustics are great, equipment top notch, staff friendly, and the vibe just right.  The perfect home for us to open up these new arrangements – fresh ones every show!

Also Tracy Stark and Tom Hubbard. And… I’m probably gonna spend some time talking about my hot doctors…because I’ve reached an age where those are the people I spend the most time with. It’s so sad that I actually invited them all to the show. And they’re coming. Well, I haven’t asked my dermatologist. That relationship is still too new.

SALON is an ongoing open entertainment event in which singers, writers and musicians share their talent with each other and audience members. Doors open at 7pm for sign-up. We begin at 7:30, take a 15-minute break around 9pm and end at 10:30. If you would like to sign up to perform, see one the evening’s ‘Mamettes’ to fill out a card with your name, the name of your song, whether or not Mark will be playing for you and any upcoming events you’d like to promote. We do not present performers in order of sign-up, however, indicating requests as clearly and as early as possible as far as time restraints are concerned always makes everything much more possible.  ALWAYS BRING SEVERAL SONG SELECTIONS to avoid duplication. All types of material, on or off theme are always welcome at Salon. We enthusiastically welcome instrumentalists, poets, playwrights, essayists, comics, illusionists and performance artists. Please limit your selections to three or four minutes in length (including patter). Please also bring clear, complete charts for Mark to read. Flash photography is not allowed. Please turn off all noise making devices and give performers your undivided attention.

$10.00 cover charge (cash at the door) and a $15 food/beverage minimum (cash or credit).

Videography available for an additional fee.

    Approximate running time: 3 hours
